NML Syphilis Serology Proficiency Program
<<Return to LaboratoryDetails
In a calendar year, each participant receives two panels, each consisting of five sera for syphilis testing. Participants receive a report following each panel that compares their results to the expected results.
Determination of Assigned Values:
The expected qualitative and quantitative results for all tests are determined based on testing performed at the NML, as well as consensus results from participating laboratories.
Evaluation of Performance:
Qualitative results (per method):
A result is considered “correct” if the qualitative result obtained by a participant for a test serum matches the expected result.
Quantitative results (per method):
A result is considered “correct” if the quantitative result obtained by a participant for a test serum is within ±1 titre of the expected result.
Report Distribution:
Interim reports are sent to each participating laboratory approximately one month after the submission deadline for Panel A and Panel B. A final report is issued in December.
The NML Syphilis Serology Proficiency Program is designed to test the performance of laboratories conducting a variety of treponemal and non-treponemal tests. Participants include provincial public health laboratories, hospitals, Canadian Blood Services, private companies and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) along with their affiliates. Our ultimate goal is to improve laboratory services across Canada and other countries in the serodiagnosis of syphilis.

NML Transfer permit:
A valid transfer permit is required to send proficiency testing panels to participants. The QAP Coordinator provides Form SES-F-052A to participants, which must be completed and returned along with the required supporting documentation.
Transfer permits have an expiry date. The QAP Coordinator will contact participants in advance to initiate the renewal process.
Participants are assigned numeric codes which anonymizes their identity. Participant’s contact information and results are not shared among the group.
